Warming Sock Treatment

Putting on wet socks may not seem the most logical way of beating your cold or flu but, while it may sound crazy, it really works. And even better, it doesn’t cost a penny!

The “Warming Sock Treatment” should be started at the first indication of any infection, inflammation, or congestion in the ears, eyes, sinus, throat, or lungs.

This treatment is most effective if repeated for as many nights as necessary to improve the condition.

Materials needed:

  • 1 pair thin, 100% cotton socks
  • 1 pair thick, 100% wool socks
  • warm foot bath or warm bath/shower
  • towel

Method:

  1. Just before bed, warm your feet by soaking your feet in warm water for 5-10 minutes or taking a bath or shower. (*This is very important as the treatment will not be as effective if your feet are not warm.) Dry off.
  2. Take a pair of 100% cotton socks and soak them completely with cold water. Wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.
  3. Place the cold cotton socks on your feet. Cover the cotton socks with the thick, dry wool socks. Bundle up and go directly to bed. Avoid getting chilled.
  4. Keep the socks on overnight. By morning, the socks will be dry.

How it works: There is a reflex arc that connects the bottom of your feet and your respiratory tissue that extends from your nose down into your lungs. The presence of cold moisture from the cold, wet socks stimulates this reflex which in turn increases circulation by drawing blood from congested tissues in your respiratory tract down to your feet to warm up your socks. This technique improves overall circulation and delivery of nutrients to the affected tissues, which ultimately speeds healing.

Bonus: The treatment has a sedating effect and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. It can also be effective in treating headaches and migraines.
